Channels have one flat back (the web) and two flanges on the same side, so they suit framing, lintels, stair stringers and edge trim.
How to Read a Channel Size
In a size like C8x11.5, C means American Standard channel, 8 is the nominal depth in inches and 11.5 is the weight in pounds per foot. C channels have tapered inner flange faces, so the listed flange thickness tf is an average. x̄ is the distance from the back of the web to the centroid.
