Use this angle iron weight calculator to get the weight of a steel angle per foot and for any length. Pick one of the 137 AISC angle sizes, or choose Custom size and enter the two legs and the thickness for any angle, including small bar-size angles that AISC does not list.
Angle Iron Weight Formula
A steel angle’s cross-section area is (A + B − t) × t, where A and B are the leg lengths and t is the thickness, all in inches. Steel weighs about 490 lb/ft³, which is 3.4028 lb per foot for each square inch of area:
Weight (lb/ft) = 3.4028 × (A + B − t) × t
Example: a 2 x 2 x 1/4 in angle weighs 3.4028 × (2 + 2 − 0.25) × 0.25 = 3.19 lb/ft. AISC lists 3.19 lb/ft for L2x2x1/4, a match. On other sizes the rounded fillet and toes of a rolled angle make the AISC weight differ from the formula by up to about 1.5%. For kg/m, multiply lb/ft by 1.488.

Angle Iron Weight FAQ
How much does a 20 ft stick of angle iron weigh?
Multiply the weight per foot by 20. L2x2x1/4 is 3.19 lb/ft, so a 20 ft length weighs about 64 lb. L4x4x1/4 is 6.6 lb/ft, so 20 ft weighs about 132 lb.
Is the calculated weight exact?
The AISC sizes use tabulated weights. The custom formula ignores the small rounded fillet at the inside corner, so it can differ from mill weight by a percent or two. Actual weight also varies with rolling tolerances.
Does stainless or aluminum angle weigh the same?
No. This calculator is for carbon steel at 490 lb/ft³. Stainless steel is about 2% heavier, and aluminum weighs about one third as much.
